March 15, 2004 Cape Cod Times 319 Main St. Hyannis, MA 02601 Dear Editors: In his March 8 letter Michael J. Langlais misrepresents Judaism, Christianity, and the American constitutional tradition of religious liberty. There are many different faith traditions that identity as either Jewish or Christian, and many interpretations and translations of their various versions of scriptures. There is no agreed on “universal moral law” within these traditions, especially when it comes to matters of gender identity and sexual orientation. Furthermore, a growing percentage of the population belongs to faith traditions that do not identify themselves as Jewish or Christian, or do not belong to any religion at all, and the United States Constitution, specifically Article 6 and Amendments 1 and 14, give equal rights and protections to all people, regardless of their belief systems. Sincerely, Barbara Lamond Purdom Christopher Purdom Interfaith Working Group Coordinators
