February 14, 2004 San Diego Union-Tribune PO Box 191 San Diego, CA 92112-4106 Dear Editors: We disagree completely with every point of your February 8 marriage editorial, but we were especially disturbed by your insistence that the legal meanings of words be consistent with a specific religious definition. That is theocracy, and it is something we supposedly do not have in this country. Despite your claim to the contrary, there is no single religious definition of marriage, and a growing number of religious organizations, congregations and clergy from a wide variety of faith traditions apply the term marriage to all of the couples they bless, regardless of gender. If you insist on editorializing in favor of segregation and oppression you should at least base your argument on facts. Sincerely, Barbara Lamond Purdom Christopher Purdom Interfaith Working Group Coordinators
