February 8, 2004 St. Paul Pioneer Press 345 Cedar Street St. Paul, MN 55101 Dear Editors: We were confused by your choice of headline and by the quote from Tom Prichard in your February 5 story, “Most oppose gay marriages.” The point of the article was not that most people oppose equal marriage rights for same-gender couples, but that most people really didn’t care one way or the other, and certainly not enough to amend the Constitution. Prichard’s complaint about the wording of the survey question is ridiculous. Regardless of what Prichard claims the purpose of an amendment is, the obvious intent and clear effect is to legally reinforce the second-class citizenship of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people by imposing a particular religious definition of marriage on the laws of the state.
