February 18, 2004 Fort Worth Star Telegram PO Box 1870 Fort Worth, TX 76101 Dear Editors: Thank you for your February 13 article about same-gender couples applying for marriage licenses. We were concerned however, by the quote from the Rev. C.M. Singleton, who was “dismayed that many gay and lesbian activists are linking their efforts to the civil rights fight of the 1960s” and who thinks that the current movement “has no relationship with the civil rights movement.” At the very least the two movements are linked because they are supported by some of the same people, including John Lewis, James Lawson, Rodney Powell, and Coretta Scott King, all of whom have made very explicit connections between the two movements. The next time somebody tells you there’s no connection, you might want to mention those names to them. Sincerely, Barbara Lamond Purdom Christopher Purdom Interfaith Working Group Coordinators
