Dear Editors:

We were extremely disturbed by the anti-gay quotes in your 
April 21 article “Activists start petition to ban gay marriage.”   
The activists quoted are trying to make it even more difficult for 
the members of some families to take care of each other purely on 
the basis of religious fear (“I feel God will withdraw his blessing 
of America”) and an inability or unwillingness to distinguish between 
the legal statuses of animals and consenting adult humans.   We are 
fortunate to live in a religiously free country where people can hold 
and express whatever beliefs they want, but those are incredibly bad 
reasons for changing any law, and they are especially galling coming 
from leaders at an event funded by organizations that are supposedly 
dedicated to helping families.
